SUCCESS = Everyday is NEW BIRTH!

After a gap of over 6 month, I finally wrote my blog. During this period, I received several comments, queries as to why I am not writing. Let me tell you the truth,"I was rushing to complete so many things during this period". I have this strange filling in me, that I need to finish the agenda and purpose of being in this life as early as I can, as if today is the last day. I thought, I am getting too much worked up and that is why I am having such a strange filling. I almost felt that something is wrong with me, and that I am just trying too much! I was also almost convinced by my so called peers, colleagues and friends that I am doing too much, and I am doing too fast - as if there is no next day. It is indeed strange to feel this way! I was looking for the answer for this. At last, I got my answer earlier today.

On one of the entertainment show (SaReGaMaPa 2009) His Holiness Baba Ramdev said, "Meri Jindagi ki har subaha mera eak naya Janma hai. Mera eak din eak jindagi ke barabar hai. Jiske liye parmatma ne muze is dharati per bheja hai use main eak din main karna chahata hun. Main ise manta hoon ki jise main aaj na kar saka use main kal kaise kar paunga, aur jisko main kal kar paunga, use main aaj karoon.". I got the answer as to why his holiness Ramdev is successful - becuase he treat every day as new life and new birth - as if tomorrow is not on horizon. This keeps you on your toes, and always in positive dynamics which leads to success in any field that you enter.

Unfortunately, not all of us realise this mantra. We take life so casually as if you have unlimitted span to be in this form of life. With every passing moment, we loose the opportunity to win or succeed. Success calls that you treat every moment, day and period as if you go one fresh new opportunity. Because, SUCCESS is -

SUCCESS = Everyday is NEW BIRTH.

SUCCESS = Complete the TASK

While Mumbai was being attacked on 26/11 (26th Nov. 2008)- hundreds of innocent people were killed, and thousands were held hostage, far away from my mother land, I was helplessly watching the tragedy unfolding on the television. Never before, I was glued to television for over 65 hours, and why not? My nation, my nationality, my existence, my mother(India) was being brutally attacked by few extremists.

Finally Taj (Hotel Taj Mahal) was liberated, and sanitised entire nation was cheering the victory of our forces, and mourning scarifice of some its brave sons. After completing their job, members of the our security forces were calmly getting back into their buses, as if nothing as happened. No sign of tiredlessness, no celebration of any victory, they were just retrieving back into their barracks like any other job that they would do during the time of peace. One of the CNN-IBN reporter asked one of the soilder, "App ko iss wakt kaise laga raha hai" (How are you feeling at this moment). Without any expression, and great composure, he promptly replied, "Hamne hamara kaam kiya hai, Jada kutch nahin" (We have just completed our TASK, nothing much).

Tears rolled down my chicks. I could not resist to stand up on my seat, and salute the spirit of this brave son of India, for his spirit, his professionalism. He and his colleague after such an heroic fight only felt that "they did their JOB". What a humility! I got my answer as to why India is Great? - we do have sons and daughters who just do their TASKS! This is why, India would amongst all odds will continue to prosper, and would emerge as most successful nation in the world.

"Doing our TASK with total dedication is way to SUCCESS". However, amongst many high profile 'mantra's we forget this simple sutra. SUCCESS is directly proportional to number of successful tasks that you have performed. As you perform you each TASK, you become stronger, you learn new technique, you become wiser, you achieve new skill, and thus you become little more expert than you were before, you gain more experience - which is all you need to be successful. Further, when you do each such TASK with simplicity, dedication and humility, why success will not be yours? It would surely would be yours!

However, unfortunate fact is that- often such simple and most basic sutra is ingnored by all those we aspire and strive for success. We often look for shortcuts, and ignore as many of these task on your way to success would be so simple, so negligible that we do think it is not necessary to complete them. However, we forget that no TASK is simple, every task has its purpose, because every step in the ladder of success is important.

Every single, soilder of this great nation understand this. This is why, we are successful nation, and we would continue to be successful. All that we need to do is to salute the spirit of our brave soliders, and attempt to assimilate this very basic sutra in our mind, heart and act. Because,

SUCCESS = Complete the TASK!

SUCCESS = Compete with Yourself only!

There is mis-conception in almost everyone's mind that success means competing with others. At least that is what I was taught by everyone for quite sometime. Therefore we end up comparing ourselves with others. That often leads to frustration, and self rejection. As a child many including my parents, teachers, relatives and others compared me with other kids. I was always surprised as to why they do so. Because, I have some qualities which others don't! I am not physically well built, but others are! Some have luxurious life, which I am deprived off! When there is no equality, and evenness in facilities, scenarios, and resources then does such an comparison sounds logical?

However, as I started observing, and reading about successful personalities, I am now confident that they were successful because they did not compete with others, but they compete with themselves. For instance, do you think Mahatma Gandhi would have been successful in leading India to its freedom and liberation, if he would have competed with contemporary leaders of his time? Certainly not! Because, it would have been hard for him to find leader of his stature and vision - who could dream of leading nation to freedom, and if he would have decided to compete against his peers, I am confident he would have not been successful enough as he was! But the secrete of his success is that he competed with himself, his belief, his dreams, his work ethics, his dedication to the cause, and thereby he continued to raise his bar of performance higher and higher all the time.

There are numerous examples of several legendary successful persons, who never competed with others but with themselves. Late Dhirubhai Ambani would not have raised empire called Reliance and Sachin Tendulkar would not have been loved as "master blaster" all across the globe, if they would have competed with others. Each of these individual competed with themselves only. When you compete with others you not only waste time, create uncomfortable scene around, but you also look ability to improve. Thereby when you compare and compete with others your chances of being successful individual degrade. When a spinter run the race, though it appears that he or she is competing with others, but in reality he / she is competing with himself or herself. They are actually improving their own performance compared to their last one. Therefore,

SUCCESS = Compete with yourself only!

SUCCESS = Overcome your GREED!

About two weeks back I was visiting Cambridge, UK for business purpose. On my way back from the place of appointment to Cambridge railway station, I called for a cab. True to British reputation cab came on dot time. It was drizzling and thus, I hurriedly put my bag into the boot of the car and jumped on the seat next to the driver. As the cab got in motion, I said "Hello" to the driver and he responded promptly and warmly. Then, suddenly he started talking to me, and said "You know there is no point working on all these nature protection issues, we can not save nature truely, as long as we remain to be GREEDY!".

I cant explain, but for couple of moments together I was in a state of shock. I just could not respond, and I was speechless, response-less, as well stunned with his statement. I am often good at responding spontaneously, but he kind of clean bowled me. What a co-incidence it was? Just couple of minutes back, I was discussing own exactly same issue, with so call experts in the field of biodiversity, nature conservation - on how to protect the nature, and conserve the species. Though, I enjoyed that discussion, I think my cab driver hit at the root cause of the whole problem which many of us often do not wish to talk about! It is true that more than information and knowledge, WISDOM is crucial. How correct my driver friend was, that it is human GREED which is causing all kinds of problem, and thus becoming major stumbling block into his own progress, and sustainable success.

However, not many of realizes that GREEDINESS is often the cause of why one is not successful. Greed is defined as the selfish desire for or pursuit of money, wealth, power, food, or other possessions, especially when this denies the same goods to others. When one has such selfish desires, means that your objective and goal for success is not holy, and pure. And success is all about being pure in your purpose of seeking it. However, commonly the line between desire to succeed and selfish desire or greed is so fine, that one never realizes when he/she has crossed it towards the worst. Therefore, one must carefully analyze and introspect the ultimate reason as to why you wish to achieve success. IS it for selfish desire or to satisfy your GREED (which I can promise you would never be able to satisfy as it is not "holy") or to benefit to others too, in addition to your own desired benefit! Because,

SUCCESS = LIT THE CANDLES!

Last week, I was in Kenya participating as a resource person in the East African workshop on Biodiversity Informatics. As usual several individuals came up to me after the lectures and told me that they were impressed, and liked my talks. However, the coordinator of the workshop summarized to me that "I have lit many candles, and inspired many careers". I was humble, and just thanked GOD for gifting me with an ability to do so.

There are several individuals who concentrate and focus their energy to improve themselves, and grow professionally and individually, but alone. But only those who have ability to lit the candles, and bring-in positive difference in other other lives, could be termed as "Successful" ones. Mother Teresa was not only successful, but made place in hearts of millions and billions, because she touched many lives, inspired many careers, gave purpose of life to many individuals. This is true for all successful individuals may it be Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Mahatma Phule, and many other. There is long yet countable list of such successful persons, because there are only few who has ability to lit the candles and inspire the careers, and that's why they are successful.

Do you want to be one of such successful individual? Do you have aspirations to be in club of successful individuals, then learn, and consciously attempt to encourage others, lit the candles and inspire careers irrespective of class, creed, religion, community, region or country. Lightening candles should be practiced beyond boundaries, even at times, it means putting yourself in "discomfort" or stretching beyond normal hours. There is a great fun in doing so. Because -

SUCCESS = LIT THE CANDLES!

SUCCESS = Gulp the Anger!

It always happen that when someone accuses you based on baseless and false facts, and figures; you often loose your temper and anger flows through your voice, expressions and also through bodyline. I have been in such situations often. Initially it was difficult to control yourself. Even now, I can not say that I have overcome this. But, if I reflect "how I was was" some 20 years back and "how I react now", I can say that I am now much better in managing and controlling my anger.

In fact, just today twice I was instigated by two separate individuals by almost accusing, and associating mistakes that I was not part of. Within me, I was boiling with anger, and wanted to give befitting response. However, I just counted up to 10 and diverted my mind away from the accusations. Though I lost respect for them momentarily, and felt like telling them that they are wrong; a though that came to my mind - "what's the use of saying this tu tu, main main; it is not going to lead anywhere, but would rather widen the rift". I just smiled and kept quite.

I think I did right thing. Both of them came back after a while to tell me that they did not mean that I was wrong, and that it just happened in a spur of the moment, and in excitement. Almost apologetically, they just stopped short of saying "Sorry", but went on to explaining how they were misled and that they did not meant what they said earlier. Well, I just smiled again, as I was nothing much to say and that I need not too - as these were just such a minor incidents, which merit no further discussions.

However, I kept thinking about the ripples, if I too would have reacted in excitement earlier. Good that I gulped my anger and was able to control it. I realized and experienced one of the well known, yet least practiced sutra of success - Gulp the Anger! Because -

SUCCESS = Gulp the Anger!

SUCCESS = "DIP IN IT"!

Recently, I was in South Africa both at Pretoria and at Cape Town. At Cape Town, I was participating in the conference, where on one of the evening cultural program was organised. Local ethnic troop presented several of the South African dance forms and rituals. Later in Cape Town at its waterfront, I had an opportunity to witness few more dance troops, performing with perfection. While I was spellbound with the performance, overwhelmed with energy of these dance forms, and their perfections and synchronization; I was noticed one very essential recipe of these performances, and its participant, "dedication"!.

They were totally dipped in it - for them while they were performing there was no world beyond their dance. They were clueless that hundreds of people, tourists from all parts of world are watching their every step. They were just too immersed in it, and they were enjoying every bit of what they were doing, because they were dipped in it. Thanks to these folk artists, I realize another sutra of success, "DIP IN IT".

If you dive in a water when you don't know swimming, you would put in your 200% efforts and dedication to come out of it. That is what success is all about - the degree of success depends on who much you could dedicate to your ambition, and vision? How much loyal you are for it? This dedication, desire to achieve what you dream, and loyalty to your dreams, would be seen through your acts, and how much dip you are in these acts. Because,

SUCCESS = "DIP IN IT"!

SUCCESS = TOUCHING LIVES!

This afternoon, I was watching the CNN IBN Indian of the Year 2007 award ceremony on CNN IBN. There were several celebrity winners in several categories. However, the one category that struck my attention the most, "Indian of the year for public service". No doubt that the winner of this category for 2007 Shri. E. Shreedharan truly deserve the award. However, my heart, mind and eyes were full with emotions with determinations, dedications and pledges of the some of the nominees in this category. Ms. Koushalya, who is HIV +ve and fighting for dignity to +ve womens and their families; Dr. Sharan Patil who performed most complicated surgery on baby Lakshmi whose parent would have never offered such an complex and costly operation; Abhayanand and Anand Kumar, who have been ensuring that every poor boy and girl is capable of getting admission into IITs are truly Indians the Year!

It takes courage to fight and work hard for dignity of +ve womens when society treated her with insult and dumped her because she is +ve. She is no ordinary woman, but the lady with great will and passion to touch others lives. My salute to Koushalya!

Abhayanand and Anand Sharma has a dream to ensure that every Indian kid who comes from poor strata of our society is intellectually empowered enough to be selected in IITs. What a committment! How many of us could touch the lives of people like this!

I liked what Dr. Sharan Patil said responding to his nomination, "There are government hospitals for poor children requiring simple operations, and private, costly hospitals requiring complex hospitals, but there are no affordable hospitals for poor children in need of complex surgeries!". He not only aptly summarized the science but put his agenda of serving and curing poor kid requiring complex medical treatments. No doubt why wouldn't he be Godly figure for several of those whose lives and heart he touched with care!.

Through the work, deed, dedication, passion and determination of these individuals I learn one more mantra of success "Touch the lives". Your success is directly proportional to numbers of lives you have touched for better. These are real successful individuals in my mind. If you apply this analogy to analyze live and work of any successful individual you would realize that each one of them is successful because they are touching lives of others without asking for returns. Thus,

SUCCESS = TOUCHING LIVES!

SUCCESS = INDEPENDENCE OF MIND!

Happy Independence day India! I am writing this one from the airport lounge in Copenhagen. I am on my way to USA where resides the stautue of liberty. Sign of independence. Earlier this monring, I was watching republic day parade, celebration of Indian independence at the Rajpath. As I was travelling on my way to the airport, this thought crossed my mind "Why India is successful?". I think not only India, but any nation on the planet will only be successful when it is independent. All those economies which are liberated would only flurish! So is there connection between independence and success? Does is apply to an individual?

As I kept thinking on this, I got my answer, "Success is directly proportional to the indepenece state of mind". Just look into any successful individual around you! May it be writer, painter, actor, social activist, naturalist, scientists, economists, innovators and enterprenuers. All of these successful individuals are successful because they have mind of their own. Just look into this years Padma awardees. Sachin Tendulkar is successful because he has passion and dedication for his occupation - cricket. R. K. Pachuri received Nobel on behalf of IPCC as its Chair, becuse he led IPCC to new heights, becuase he has passion for what he is doing, because he has belief in it. All this because all these great individuals have achieved and attained "independence of mind".

Independecne of mind is a state where you begin to think on your own. You make your own judgement. You are not influenced by other schools of thoughts. It is a state of mind where you begin to appreciate what is right and what is wrong. It is state of mind where you believe in what you think, where you take all risk and are aware of pros and cons of consequences of your thinking and publicaly sharing it. Once you achieve such a state of mind, you would generate passion and dedication about what you believe is correct and good. Once you have this no matter what obstacles come your way, you get strength to overcom it. When this happens success always keep touching your feet and always smile with you. What is essential though is to attain the state of independence of mind. So dare yourself and be independent not physically, and economically but also psychologically. Because,

SUCCESS = INDEPENDENCE OF MIND!

SUCCESS = TEAMING UP TOGETHER!

This morning, I woke up to hear a good news that Indian cricket team is inching closer to its victory against Australia at Perth. Later during the day I witnessed Team India's emphatic, historic, memorable win over mighty Australian's on their home turf. This history is unique for many reasons, that are being debated in media so intensely. Bad umpiring at Sydney test, accusation of racial abuse against Herbhajan created storm in India and its cricket loving citizens. Many did even suggested that Indian team should abandon the tour of Australia and come back. But then Anil's (Kumble) boys and the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) decided to continue with the tour. Not only that they demonstrated generosity and big heart by withdrawing charges of sledging and abuse against one of the Australian player. But they were determinant to give a befitting response back to Australians not through words but through the game. That is precisely what Jumbo and his boy's did and won this crucial game on mighty Australians on the world's fastest pitch. In doing so they also broke Australia's winning streak. Not only that but Jumbo also achieved significant mark of being the only 3rd bowler in the world to cross 600 wickets mark. The jubilation is obvious, not only in Indian dressing room, but also back home in India.

Every one played well, but two things that struck me and rather impressed me was (a) the spirit of sportsmanship with which Indian's played, and (b) amazing display of teaming up that they demonstrated. Every one played according to game plan, they perform their character as directed, and did this in style. Such synchronization of acts, and coordination can never happen, if there is no team spirit and togetherness amongst each and every one of the team and its management. I was moved with this display of team spirit!

But then another thought that crossed my mind, it was not only Team India was a winner, but every team member was a winner. They individually won because team won. However, many of us who wish, aspire and dream easily forget this very important fact. You can be successful only if your team is successful. For this to happen you have to be 110% team player and not individual skill master. Even if those who are known for their individual success par excellence has team behind them. If Sania, Mahesh, Peas, and Vishwanathan won their matches, it is not only they alone who deserve the applaud - it is their family, trainer, coach and managers who also have contributed significantly. So this very thought that I don't need others, I can do it all alone, I have that ability to be solo performer, it self is suicidal one. Not only suicidal it is clear demonstration of one's arrogance and selfishness. In fact, such a thought is first step of your life long defeat. Thus, one needs to be a team player, because together if team wins, you would win. Thus, teaming together in what so ever you do, in which ever profession you are, and even within your family is important.

Whenever, I reflect back on my own achievements, I am always thankful to all those who contributed directly and indirectly. If they would not have contributed and scarificed, there was no reason that a human being of my character could achieve the success, that I have achieved so far. My parents, society, friends, teachers, colleagues, my wife Pradnya and even my daughter Maitri has contributed significantly to my success. If they, would not have team up with me, there was no chance for me to achieve what I have achieved. Thus,

SUCCESS = TEAMING UP TOGETHER!

SUCCESS = BE A DONOR!

As I travel across the continents, I have come across one very common community in every land, a community of beggars. In few regions they are rare to sight, where in others you have to make an effort to avoid them, yet you come across them. Needless to say regions where you rarely sight them are wealthiest part of our globe, and regions in which you can't avoid them are poor ones. However, this fact always make me to think and introspect, as to why one region, nation, community, or individual is richer than others. Why many remains poor, and few in spite of being poor change their fortune to be wealthiest. This afternoon a thought came to my mind which gave me much sought after answers. Few can change their fortunes from "poor to richer" because they are DONERS!

Yes! if you have attitude to donate, and share you would not have to make extra efforts to be rich, wealthier and successful. The richness that I am referring to is not only in terms of money, but the richness of deeds, qualities, smartness that led an individual to success. Many saints were poor financially, but were religiously rich. Similarly, intellectuals are rich with their intelligence. Sportsman are rich with stamina, skills and endurance. However, none of them can be successful unless they don't donate their endurance, skills, stamina, intelligence and knowledge. It is only when they start sharing, donating as well benefiting society or humanity with their richness, that we start recognizing them as SUCCESSFUL individuals.

On the contrary there are many intellectuals, who keep their knowledge to themselves. Their are many artists who never dare to entertain people with their performance. There are many painters, who never come forward to paint the portrait. All such individuals are never recognized as successful ones. Reason is simple, they don't donate what they have. What so ever wealth in the broader sense that you have, you need to share and donate. If you share and donate you will receive rewards multiple times, than what you have donated and shared. For example, when a rich person donate "x" amount of money, he earns multiple times of "x". Thus, irrespective of how little, and how more wealth of money, property, friendship, goodwill, intelligence, skills you have, always continue to donate some of it, and you will be richer multiple times. Thus,

SUCCESS = BE A DONOR!

SUCCESS = PRIORITIZING ACTIONS!

On the eve of new year 2008 we were with Date's at their residence in Talegaon. By the time Pradnya, Maitri and I came back home it was 1.30 a.m. of 1st January 2008. Preventive health care being my priority for 2008, I had planned checkup at polyclinic as part of LIC policy on 1st morning. At 7.30 a.m. I was on my way to this polyclinic Congress Bhavan. I passed through Mangala theaters, I saw big crowd of nearly 100 students, both boys and girls at the gate of Mangala theaters waiting for it to open.

I just halted for a moment and asked one of them, why are they crowding in such a number on 1st day of the new year. He promptly responded that,"they are here to watch the morning show of one of the block buster movie". I was shocked and senseless on hearing this. What is important, going to morning show by bunking lectures and that too on very first calendar day of the year, or planning and investing in future?

It is none of my business to advice someone as to when one should do what? However, if I would be in place of these students, I would not have gone for morning show, and certainly not on the 1st day of the year? I would certainly prioritize my actions, as well investment of time, money and energy. I would do this because success is not all about dreaming, and planning, but it is much about taking actions, and taking right actions as right time, which means prioritizing. One must clearly know which actions one should take as they begin their day and end their day. As a student I had watched movies, I had watched morning shows, but certainly not on 1st day of the year, and not on days when I had some important actions to take in order to shape my life, and be successful in my career.

When I analyze the lives of successful individuals, one thing that stand out is he / she is successful because they took right action at right time, with right sense of devotion and sincerity. Think, what would be the scene today if freedom fighters and leaders would not have fought for independence, and only concentrated on their personal goals? Certainly, we would not have enjoyed the freedom that we have today! Think, what if our soldiers decide not to defend our borders against and amidst all odds? We can never claim to be safe and secure! Think, if Mahatma Phule and Savitribai Phule would have decided not to take on mantle of women education? We would not have lady Prime Minister and President! Thus, success in more than one sense depends on taking right actions at right time, which means prioritizing what you do and when you do! Thus,

SUCCESS = PRIORITIZING ACTIONS!

SUCCESS = ADAPTING TO CHANGES!

I have been in Europe and elsewhere across the globe several times। However, on 8th January I had this surprising experience at the Brussels airport। I was returning to Copenhagen from Annual leave at home। Brussels airport is the European hub of the Jet Airways, India’s truly private international airlines। On my arrival Passport control (immigration) officer greeted me with “Namaste”(नमस्ते), in very typical and authentic manner. I was taken for a surprise. But I was totally bold when he thanked me with “Dhanyawad”(धन्यवाद). For a moment I felt as if I am in heavenly India, with some gentleman Indian officer in the seat. But the reality was – place: Brussels and Passport Officer: Belgian national.

I thought for a moment as to what was a need for the officer to greet and thank me in Hindi? Answer was simple adapting to changes! With India’s economy on rise, many Indian’s are travelling often to Europe and America. Jet Airways designating Brussels as its European hub is an indicator of that significant rise of Indian tourist overseas. If overseas nations, has to continue to attract these Indian travelers often, then it is necessary to be friendly to them, or to create an environment where in Indian travelers continue to choose Brussels as their transit point for travel in and out Europe. What a smart decision on behalf of Belgian authorities to instruct its passport control officers to greet and thank in Hindi? This small gesture would certainly go long way. I thus realized another sutra of success, “Adapting to Changes”. Only those who could adapt to changing scenarios would continue to exist and prosper. Success is also directly proportional to rate of such adaptation to newer situations and scenario’s. Thus,

SUCCESS = ADAPTING TO CHANGES!

SUCCESS = SKETCH YOURSELF!

Welcome 2008! Wish you all a very happy and prosperous new year 2008!

My daughter often surprises me with her spontaneous answers. For past few months, she often told us that she is unhappy with us as we have not invited her for our marriage. Typical of kids! However, last week was different. Pradnya, me and Maitri were passing by the Don Bosco Highschool, in Yeradwada area of Pune where Pradnya and I tied knots for life on 7th June 1996. As we were passing by the venue, I told Maitri that Pradnya and I got married here. Maitri spontaneously responded that she could not attend it, as she was with GOD sketching her life. Pradnya and I were totally taken for great surprise with this answer, and we felt extremely proud of our daughter. This incident ignited my thought process, with a question – how many of us sketch our lives?

Success is not a chance it is planned event. If it is so, then one can not achieve it with mere luck or blessings. But it could be achieved only with proper blue print and stricter implementation in timely manner. However, the question is how many of us feel it is necessary to draw such a blue print of our success? How many of us even attempt to sketch the life and its most important milestones? Since, we don’t we miss the success, and then we blame it to our luck. Success is a process, and planning is integral part of this process. This not only involves dreaming, but also sketching it on paper and then implementing it with definite time plan.

I have personally experienced on more than one occasion that when ever I have dreamed with strong conviction and belief about specific milestone of success, and then put it into words, and action plan, I was better able to implement it and thus I achieved all such milestones and challenges. I would not have achieved them, if I would not have sketched them. So as we usher in to new year, sketch even the minor milestones of your success. By the way, no milestone or achievement is minor, as each of such challenges when overcome, lead you closer to the grand success. Thus,

SUCCESS = SKETCH IT YOURSELF!
